returned to the family farm in 1990. Opal is the third generation to reside at the Underbakke/Ward farm. Louie L. Underbakke (4 Nov 1896-12 Jan 1975) was born in Ossian, IA. He moved to the Fred and Jennie Ward farm when he married Violet (Wilbur) Ward. Violet (3 Oct 1898-30 May 1992) was born in Winneshiek Co. She was adopted by Fred and Jennie Ward when she was five years old. Opal married Harold Edwin Smith (b. 18 May 1927) on 28 Mar 1954 in Merrysville, MO. She and Harold had five children: Donny Tjelemene, Brenda Lee, Roberta Darlene, Klee Edwin and Jennie Marie. Usgaard, Peder and Julia (Severtsen)(Palmer and June (Barth) Anderson) Peder and Julia (Severtsen) Usgaard lived in Decorah where Peder worked for the Baker Lumber Company. Both Peder and Julia are buried in Phelps Cemetery. Peder and Julia were the parents of 12 children. All the children are now dead. Isabell Gjertina (10 Feb 1898-29 Dec 1990) married Ole A. Anderson (4 Dec 1891-30 Jan 1973); Anna (26 Sep 1899-2 Nov 1974) married Leo Leland Haslip (12 Nov 1902-18 May 1972); Selma (11 Apr 1901-15 Apr 1981) married HansOpsahl (5 Dec 1893-7 Oct 1964); Peter (2 Apr 1903-22 Oct 1961) married Alice Andres (12 Mar 1917-21 Dec 1971); Selmer (29 Apr 1905-12 Nov 1964) married Gladys Hovden (b. 6 Jan 1915); Helen Idella (28 Mar 1907- ?) married Harry Oliver Birdsell (9 Jul 1904-9 Sep 1961); Judith Pauline (22 Jun 1909- ?) married Arthur Moritz Lange (15 Sep 1913-21 Dec 1977); Luella Caroline (30 Sep 1911-3 Jul 1960) married Leonard Maynard Larson (11 Nov 1902-Apr 1949); Julian (2 Jul 1914-2 May 1963) married June lone Itse (b. 17 May 1921); Ruby Gelina (b. 8 Nov 1915- ? ); Raymond (15 Feb 1919-Jun 1985) married Molly; and Vivian (23 Oct 1920- ? ) married George Rosiah (b. 21 Sep 1921).
